Breast Cancer Screening

Did you know…?

  1. Finding breast cancer early saves lives.
  2. If breast cancer is found early, when it is very small, there is a good chance of a cure.
  3. Mammograms (breast x-rays) can find small breast cancers several years before they can be felt.
  4. The two major risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and getting older. Eight out of ten breast cancers are found in women age 50 and over.
  5. Most women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease.
  6. It is recommended that women age 50 and over have a mammogram, generally every two years.
  7. Women can call to make an appointment. A Doctor’s referral is not needed. The service is free of charge.
  8. The Ontario Breast Screening Program offers women 50 years and over:
    • high-quality mammography
    • a reminder to return for screening
    • help to set up extra tests, if needed; and
    • information on breast health.
